Employee wellbeing 'no longer an optional extra'
Businesses of all sizes need to understand how to keep their employees happy. But what do British employees really want from their workplace?
New research from CABA, a wellbeing charity for chartered accountants, has found that 13% of workers feel stressed at least once a day.
Nearly three-quarters (74%) of the 2,000 UK employees surveyed said that their ability to concentrate is negatively affected by poor wellbeing, with 13% taking time off sick to cope with stress.
Just over one in five (22%) employees believe working hours affect their workplace wellbeing, and 15% cited organisational culture as a factor. Another 10% suggested that good managers impact their workplace wellbeing, while 6% think their personal development at work is a factor.
The research also revealed that due to employer expectations and work pressures, employees miss at least 26 occasions or social events every year including gym classes, date nights, drinks with friends, and even weddings and birthdays, CABA said.
Laura Little, learning and development manager at CABA, commented: "Our research identified that struggling with poor wellbeing is not a small issue – it’s having a hugely negative impact on a large number of employees, both at work and home.
"It’s imperative that we start taking people’s wellbeing seriously, otherwise it will be the business that pays the price. Having a strategy for employee wellbeing is no longer an optional extra – people not only need it more than ever before but they also expect it.”
She also went on to mention that loyalty is a “thing of the past” – research revealed that the growth in job movers has risen to 10%, so employers need to ensure they’re doing all they can to attract and retain top talent.
Employees highlighted a variety of measures they would like to see introduced into their workplace to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Free healthy snacks/breakfasts were the most popular option on 39%, followed by free gym-style exercise classes (25%), free mobility classes (25%), and regular access to a massage (25%).
"Asking employees to provide feedback about what their company could do better not only makes them feel valued but could also provide important insight into how to get the best out of team members," Little added.
